From the 2nd to the 6th of August 2017, in the waters around Sopot Pier in Poland, the 14th edition of the Sopot Match Race took place.
It was the second stage of a new Match Race Super League series, which belongs to the Match Race World Cup Super League sailing classification. The races take place over 5 months in 8 different events across 4 continents: Europe, Oceania, North America and Asia.
In the 5 days of the event, forty regattas, with about 20 minutes each, were attended by a total of 75,000 spectators at the event and by 4.7 million viewers via social networks (Facebook, Instagram and Youtube).
This year, Nautos signed a contract to support and supply hardware with SOPOT MATCH RACE organization for the next 3 years, and this fills us with pride because it is one of the most important sailing events in Poland, where only the best skippers and their crews are able to compete in the high level of these regattas.
Our hardware worked well without any issues during the regatta and it has been confirmed to be used again for the following 2 years. The races take place between 6 teams and 32 professional sailors from Poland, France, England, New Zealand, Holland.
The collision between 2 sailboats viralized on social networks ended up putting SOPOT in the spotlight. Check below the video that got everyone in (and out of) the industry talking about:
